Summary Think and Grow Rich by Napoleon Hill

It is funny, I have read this book several times since I first came across it about 10 years ago and I have never noticed the subtitle of the book What Do You Want Most? before. However, this is exactly what most people are seeking to fulfil or solve when they are searching for this specific book or similar books – How to Achieve – What they want most.

As you can see from the below list of chapters it really is a step by step guide to growing rich (‘Step toward Riches’). These titles are exactly as they are in the book. Therefore it does not shy away from its intention and purpose; to teach you how to grow rich. Therefore if that is what you are seeking then you will receive a great deal of benefit from reading this book. Keeping in mind at only 240 pages it is totally possible to read this in just a few hours.

This Book Review will include:

  • Summary
  • Who the book is for?
  • Pros
  • Cons
  • Your Commitment
  • Next Steps
  • An Invitation to You

I first read this book many years ago and have forgotten how many times I have read it. My experience of reading it, believing its teachings and implementing the suggested strategies have changed as I understand the knowledge at a deeper level each time. I have also learnt to ‘let go’ of the pessimistic internal voice and focus on the teachings and follow the strategies rather than worrying about whether it works or not. At that point, that’s exactly when it all begins to fall into place, ironically.

The book is organised into 15 chapters:

  1. General Introduction
  2. Desire (The First Step towards Riches)
  3. Faith (The Second Step towards Riches)
  4. Auto-Suggestion (The Third Step towards Riches)
  5. Specialized Knowledge (The Fourth Step towards Riches)
  6. Imagination (The Fifth Step towards Riches)
  7. Organized Planning (The Sixth Step toward Riches)
  8. Decision (The Seventh Step towards Riches)
  9. Persistence (The Eighth Step toward Riches)
  10. Power of the Master Mind (The Ninth Step toward Riches)
  11. They Mystery of Sex Transmutation (The Tenth Step toward Riches)
  12. The Subconcious (The Eleventh Step toward Riches)
  13. The Brain (The Twelfth Step toward Riches)
  14. The Sixth Sense (The Thirteenth Step toward Riches)
  15. How to Outwit the Six Ghosts of Fear (This Outstanding Army…)

Who the Book is for?

I believe this book is for those that are:

  • Looking for a Free, Proven method to help you to Get What You Want?
  • Seeking change
  • Disatisfied or unhappy with an aspect of their life
  • Ready to change
  • Committed to their own success

positives

Pros

What is great about this book is it is:

  • Is a complete and comprehensive practical step-by-step guide as you can see from the above chapter titles.
  • You can use the book and process and implement the strategies time and time again for Free.
  • You can put steps from the book into action now.
  • Initially, 5000 copies were printed that sold for $1.50 each back in 1937. By the time of the author death (Napoleon Hill in 1970) more than 70 million copies had sold. Now with online technology, it is commonly known that the ebook (pdf version) is free to download on multiple sources as is the case on this blog too.
  • Possible to read in a few hours. I recommend reading it completely through first and then going back chapter by chapter to process and implement.

downsides

Cons

  • Be warned, it was written in 1937, therefore the writing style is different to books written now and perhaps some of the values and outcomes may be different. For example, the book was based on interviews between the author Napoleon Hill (commissioned by Andrew Carnegie) and  500 successful people across 20 years. This comprised of 500 men; this I believe, reflects a ‘sign of the times’. If written today I’m sure women would have been included in this top 500 successful people.
  • What most people have heard about this book is the claim ‘Thoughts are Things’. This quote is often misunderstood or dismissed however it is in the context of:

Truly “thoughts are things” and powerful things at that when they are mixed with definiteness of purpose, persistence, and a BURNING DESIRE for their translation into riches, or other material objects.

Therefore it is often misunderstood that to succeed you simply think the things you want. The definite of purpose, persistence and burning desire are critical to adding to achieve your desired results. Why? Because they are the elements that move you into action and not just thinking about your desires. Although if you follow the teachings of Abraham Hicks you may indeed be committed to simply thinking the things you want and you can absolutely receive them easily and with little effort. But that is a topic for another blog post.

Your Commitment

What is your commitment to getting what you want in any aspect of your life?

Are you serious?

Are you ready to take action now?

Therefore, I encourage you to take a leap of faith, after all, if you don’t have all that you want then it is time for a different level of thinking:

  1. I’m glad I came across this post. I fully plan on reading the book based on your review. I will say that I’m glad you warned about it being written in the 30s and only including interviews with men because that is the complete opposite of most of the books I’ve been reading lately. I’m hoping to report back after I read through it once or twice.

    1. That’s great to hear Briana, bookmark this post so you can find it to come back and share your experience of reading this book. Although it was written in 1937 there is so much that is still relevant, especially the Mastermind principles. I look forward to hearing how you went.

  2. I remember that this was the first motivational book I ever read. It was hard going back then as the language didn’t make for easy reading the way it was set out. I did it by simply reading a couple of pages each night before bed.

Reading this review made me remember about the book. I know it is still in my bookshelf, so I am going to re read as I think it will make a lot more sense to me now than it did when I was in my early twenties.

    1. That is great to hear Michel, I’m delighted this post has motivated you to re-read this great book. Writing it has done the same for me too! Do come back and share what you got out of it going back to it after time.

  3. Finding your post about “Think and Grow Rich” is quite interesting as I do have the book but it has been a number of years since I have read it.  Your review has reminded me of a number of interesting points about working towards what you want in life and in business.  Thank you for your insightful article.  I will search my library and read this one again.

    1. That’s great Monika I’m delighted this article has motivated you to get the book out again. There is also the free pdf link included in this article if you can’t find it. But you have also got me thinking that it is often motivating to have the physical book and to write your own notes in the pages as you read it so I’ll make sure I add a link for those that want to get their hands on a hard copy and not just an online ebook version.

  4. I’ve heard of this book before but now I’m certainly more intrigued than ever to give it a read. It’s fascinating to see how successful entrepreneurs think and to also see how just a few changes in perspective can lead to financial rewards. My brother and I have both begun building our own online businesses and something like this seems like a must have, especially in these beginning stages. I’ll be downloading this for sure.

    1. Fantastic Ryan, I’m glad to hear that you found this article so motivating, that’s exactly what it is all about. I also encourage you and your brother to come back and share your experience of reading the book and what changes it inspired in your new online businesses. Till then

  5. It is so great that I came across your review of the book Think and Grow Rich by Napoleon Hill. It is time to do something as I’m a bit confused in my thinking about how to continue my creative life.

I found this book in my mother tongue, Latvian. It cost about €6 and so I will order it immediately.

    Thanks.

    1. That’s great news Andrejs. To help others that are seeking the book in languags other than English do you mind sharing where you found the copy in your mother tongue, Latvian?

Do come back and share your experience of reading the book.

  6. Hi Fleur. I have read that book many times over the years, I first bought it about 30 years ago and still have the same copy, it’s getting pretty yellow now. It is quite amusing the way that it is worded being written in 1937. You are quite right, if Napoleon Hill had done his interviews with 500 successful people today, it would have been half women.

‘Thoughts are Things’ is right, but unless put into action it means nothing. Thanks for sharing this in your post. Love your website. Must revisit that book again tonight.

    1. Awesome Greg thanks for sharing your experience reading and re-reading this book. I’m about to pick up my copy and do the same later this evening for a refresher and also after chatting with so many people today motivated by this post and to read and reread the book. Absolutely what it is all about.

Thanks for the feedback on my website, always appreciated. Bookmark it and I look forward to your return.
