Daily Habits – The Power and Magic of Regular Routines

This How to Blog Tutorial is specifically about How to Blog Daily as the above headline suggests, highlighting the importance of positive daily routine and habits. I have been a long time advocate of regular daily habits. Positive, conscious habits you follow to take you closer to where you want to be in any area of your life. How can you establish a daily routine to support your blogging aspirations and goals?

Firstly I recommend looking at your existing daily routine and habits.

Secondly, review what habits are working for you and what habits are not.

This requires you to know what you are aiming for. Essentially what goals you are aiming to achieve. If you have not done this yet, that is the topic of another blog post. Here I share an exercise you can do to uncover your Passions, your values for you to set your goals: Passion to Purpose

Once you know your goals it is then important to break down from where you want to be to where you are now all that needs to be done to achieve the goal(s).

Now document these into a timeline using a project management tool. My personal preference is Trello. I explain how I use this in this training called Use a Daily Tool to Action Your Goals, Increase Productivity and Self-Discipline

Now that you have all your goals broken down into action steps the key is to do the work. Here I will explain how I am currently working. This is working for me now however as my goals change so do my daily habits adjust to reflect these. Therefore I share this as an example, not as the only way you can go about this.

Productivity Strategy – Batch Tasks

Is a productivity strategy that was taught to me by Productivity Coach, Linda McMahon in 2015 and my Super Affiliate Challenge Mentor, Kyle Loudoun in 2017/8 is to batch tasks.

What that means is to do similar tasks all at once. Such as sorting paperwork, opening/answering mail or email is probably more relevant now. Specific tasks for daily blogging are to work on multiple:

  • Lists of topics to write on
  • Research relevant keywords that meet criteria to attract search engine traffic
  • Write out relevant Headlines
  • Have writing templates to draw on such as a Review blog template, How to blog template, Keyword rich template
  • Plan out key points for each planned post

Therefore, for example, spend an hour or two working on multiple keywords rather than getting into the ‘keyword research zone’ for one post to work on multiple potential posts. It also means you tend to work for 2-hour blocks at a time without any interruptions, for example, emails, social notifications or phone calls. Practising this discipline increases your productivity a great deal.

Writing

notebookNow that you’ve done all the planning and you’re ready to write. Make sure you have a designated place to write that has all that you need: Good lighting, computer or paper depending on your preference, supportive chair, notebook and internet access.

Sometimes when I’m needing inspiration or to work on new ideas I’ll change my environment and go to a favourite cafe with a great view and a quality pen and my blogging notebook to jot down ideas and inspirations I can refer to later. A good quality pen, paper and setting are important to me when I’m thinking of new ideas. We are all different therefore these elements may not be as important to you. As long as you are achieving the results you seek that is what matters.

Then schedule a regular time to write. By like Ernest Hemingway, he said ‘I write every morning’. I too choose to write in the mornings because that is when I’m most alert to concentrate on detailed work. I blog between 5 and 7 am in the morning because that is when there is no one else awake in my home, therefore no distractions which enable me to produce blogs at a faster pace than if I wrote them later in the day. Now this routine works for me. If you’re a night owl then set a time that suits you and your lifestyle and home commitments. This routine doesn’t impact on the rest of the household and I begin my day knowing I have completed my planned daily post – therefore I start the day feeling like a winner!

Disciplined Approach

This is where all the very best intentions can all fall apart. This is where the rubber hits the road. It is the difference between success and failure. This is where you need to commit to your writing schedule and to get on with it and to do the work. Some people work with an accountability coach or buddy, which I too have done many times in the past. However, at the moment what is working for me is, sharing my intended goals with a trusted community of bloggers to put pressure on myself to do the work. You know what works for you so put in place the support you need to fulfil this commitment. For me, my son knows I blog between 5 and 7 am. Therefore he has fewer expectations for me to be fully focused on him during this time but after 7 he knows he has the right to interrupt me or remind me it is now family time.

Balance is the key because if you don’t spend the time with those you love on the journey to success they may not be there when you have finally arrived at your destination.

    For many years I’ve had a fixed morning routine of emails and checks that I go through – for me it ensures that I don’t miss anything out, and I follow that 7 days a week.

    Your points about planning and discipline are so important – I’m still amazed by the number of people who constantly complain to me about not being able to get things done but have no discipline and no routine.

I need to improve my discipline in my emails, don’t get me wrong I’m checking but I think I can take it to the next level so thank you for the reminder and I’m reviewing that aspect of my daily routine.

      Yes I guess, we’re all on our own path but having a daily routine is so simple to implement but incredibly powerful

  3. Blogging daily is an amazing accomplishment, and I appreciate you sharing the strategies you are using to reach that goal. I have been blogging for about a month, and so far I have been able to reach my weekly content goals. Now that I am back in classes, though, I will have to balance my time between working on my site and studying. I haven’t quite gotten into a daily routine yet, but I know it’s important that I do so I can make the most effective use of my time. I think I will now look into an online productivity tool like Trello, too. Thank you very much for the ideas.

  5. Hi Fleur! I totally needed to read this today and am so glad I came across it! As a blogger, I find that I can get so easily distracted with the million other things I need to do to upkeep my site, social media, etc. Your strategies are very helpful! It does come down to discipline and scheduling. Thank you for the great info!

  6. Great post, Thank you for the advice. I personally have been battling to keep up it everything that needs to be done. I am going to test out the Trello app, and set some daily tasks and batching tasks. The challenge is going to be the disciplined part as I usually just do what comes to mind, but lately I have been forgetting some tasks, which Im ‘the hoping Trello app will be able to help with.
